Google and other search engines can be valuable research tools for finding websites, but it's up to faculty to decide whether (or not) to allow students to use websites for research assignments. Websites can be helpful or hindering depending on their quality.
Faculty can consider the pros and cons of using websites vs. library databases when doing researchand encourage the use of an evaluative tool such as the CRAAP test to help choose appropriate resources.
