Instead of page numbers, some journal articles may have an article number or eLocator. For example:

Example of article number on a journal

To cite the article in APA:

Include the word “Article” and then the article number instead of the page range in the References List citation.

Cohen, G., Medina, E., Handysides, D., Shah, H., Arechiga, A., & Shih, W. (2023). The impact of social media usage on lifestyle behaviors and healthLifestyle Medicine, 5, Article e94https://doi.org/10.1002/lim2.94

When paraphrasing or quoting, follow APA's guidelines for in-text citations. Note that the article number or eLocator information is not included in the in-text citation. When quoting an article that has visible page numbers on the document (such as in the margins of a PDF), the page numbers may be used in the in-text citation. If there are no page numbers assigned for the article (such as the web version of the article), include the paragraph number, or a heading/section name and paragraph number where the quote is found.

  • Paraphrase example: (Cohen et al., 2023)
  • Direct quote examples:
    • (Cohen et al., 2023, p. 3)
    • (Cohen et al., 2023, para. 25)
    • (Cohen et al., 2023, Discussion section, para. 1)

To cite the article in MLA:

For articles that have article numbers or eLocators, omit both the article number and page number from the Works Cited list citation.

When paraphrasing or quoting, follow MLA's guidelines for in-text citations. For example, (Cohen et al., 2), or if there are no page numbers, (Cohen et al.)
