Not necessarily. In order for faculty or students to play music in a public location they are required to have a SOCAN license. Fees can vary depending on the organization, event, and venue. Read through their FAQs or contact SOCAN for more information.

You can't use music from sites such as iTunes, Spotify, Soundcloud, etc. Even when music is purchased, these sites have licensing terms that clearly state their intended use is private, meaning you're not allowed to play music from these services in a public location.

You can legally purchase music on CD/DVD which could then be played under the terms of a paid SOCAN license.
