This is tricky, but the answer is often no, the reason being that these books are considered consumables.

What are consumables?

Consumables are typically:

  • Published with the intent that one person will purchase and use the material
  • Identified as workbooks or notebooks, or sometimes lab manuals
  • Meant to be written in, with lots of fill-in-the-blank-type answer spaces

Why can't you copy a consumable?

Photocopying this type of material would impact the market for it, which is not allowed under fair dealing guidelines.

Faculty: if you're copying the same pages every term, you should create a course pack that has permissions sought and is sold through the Campus Store. Please note that the copyright risk of this activity is still considered moderate.
