MLA style was created by the Modern Language Association while APA style was created by the American Psychological Association. Both styles refer to a set of authoritative rules that should be followed when writing papers and citing sources, and each style has a unique citation format. Because of these variations it's important you know which style to use before you get started.
To see the difference between the styles, take a look at the sample papers on our MLA and APA Citation Guides.
