The Fair Dealing provision in the Copyright Act (section 29) permits the copying of short excerpts from a textbook. Over the duration of a semester or course, students are allowed to copy up to 10% of a textbook or a maximum of one chapter.

Cumulative copying (e.g. copying a chapter each week) is not permitted and is considered copyright infringement, which is a serious offense.
