A Works Cited list (or a References list in APA) is a formatted list of all the sources cited within your essay. Check our sample papers for an example - MLA or APA (centre column). These are the articles, books, videos, etc. that you've directly taken information from.

A bibliography, on the other hand, is a formatted list of all sources that you consulted (but didn't necessarily use) for a research assignment. These would still be formatted in MLA or APA style as directed by your instructor. An annotated bibliography adds a summary (annotation) for each source.

For more information on annotated bibliographies, including a template, check out Annotated Bibliographies on our Library Research for Students guide.
